Our Story
The goal of the Dr. Benjamin Chelem Eleonu Trust, a nonprofit organization, is based on the life and interests of the late Dr. Benjamin Chelem Eleonu. It will offer scholarship funds to students who come from low-income backgrounds and demonstrate significant financial need.
It is in pursuit of passion that his family has set up the Dr. Benjamin Chelem Eleonu Foundation. The Foundation aims, among other things, to grant scholarships to students in the home community of Dr. Eleonu–Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. Like he did in his lifetime, the scholarship is targeted at those in need who are found not to have the capacity to fund their education. Understanding that the economic situation in the country is such that most persons would claim to be in need and to ensure that those who are awarded the scholarship deserve it, screening machinery has been set up to ensure that the beneficiaries are the right persons and have passion for education. It is such persons who would value the award and make good use of it. The awards are mainly for science and technology disciplines, areas in which the need is dire.
Dr. Benjamin Eleonu was a revered doctor who was passionate about medicine and innovation and a person who always rose above his circumstances to do a great job and lead by example. He was beloved by his family, extended family, colleagues, patients, and students, who wrote pages and pages of accolades about his teaching and cited him as an influence on their lives. He won several awards for his excellence in obstetrics and gynecology and massive respect from his colleagues for his excellent performance in his work. Unfortunately, he was called to glory this past June but left behind an amazing legacy.
Mission Statement
The Dr. Benjamin Chelem Eleonu Foundation is dedicated to empowering deserving students through scholarships, focusing on those who lack the financial capacity to fund their education. Recognizing the economic challenges that many face, we have established a rigorous screening process to ensure that our support reaches truly deserving individuals who are passionate about their education and committed to their academic pursuits.
Vision Statement
The Foundation envisions a world where postsecondary education is accessible to all, free from financial barriers. By fostering perseverance and innovation, we offer opportunities for financial and in-kind support and volunteerism to those who share our vision.
In addition to Dr. Benjamin Eleonu’s passion for medicine, Benjamin also had immense pride in his people and his Ikwerre heritage. He was a founding member of both Ogbakor Ikwerre USA/Canada, Inc., and Ogbakor Ikwerre New England, Inc., and served as the latter’s vice president from 2006 to 2008. He was a known Philanthropist of his time who supported, donated, and promoted programs by Ikwerre and other Nigerian Indigenous Organizations and Communities.
Before he passed away, he spoke earnestly about giving back to his people and helping other young kids from his village achieve their dreams like he did, and that’s what this trust is going to do.
The goal of this is to:
- Helps support those who may not have sufficient resources to afford higher education.
- Recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional skills or talents in areas like sports, arts, leadership, community service, or entrepreneurship.
- This trust will also recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional skills or talents in areas such as sports, arts, leadership, community service, or entrepreneurship.
To those who share its vision, the Foundation offers opportunities to participate in its realization through financial and in-kind support and volunteerism. This trust contributes to education through perseverance and innovation for its vision of postsecondary educational opportunity without financial barriers.
